Like the other books of wisdom in the Bible, Ecclesiastes is concerned with imparting wisdom and teaching all to fear the Lord. However, it serves as a balance for the practical wisdom of Proverbs. Although Ecclesiastes finds practical wisdom beneficial, it comes to it along a reflective path. Ecclesiastes is consistent with the rest of Scripture in its explanation that true wisdom is to fear God even when we cannot see all that God is doing.

The positive examples of wealth with their exhortation to enjoy life are contrasted with the negative examples preceding and following them. The emphasis on joy is greater here than in any other passage in the book.
The capstone comes in Here an individual is described as someone who is so preoccupied with the gifts of God that he does not even recognize the vanity around him. This individual accepts life for what it is and chooses to enjoy the gifts that God gives him. This passage with its chiastic structure reinforces the view that people should enjoy life in spite of its vanities.
