Second, Christians understand the nature of God to be triune Father, Son and Holy Spirit , which is the only way that Jesus Christ, as the second person of the Trinity, could die on the cross to pay for our sins. If Jesus were not God himself, then his death on the cross would be meaningless. However, Muslims deny that Jesus died on the cross and they reject the belief in his resurrection from the dead.
Only a triune God, defined as one essence and three persons, could become incarnate and still remain God of the universe, and yet this is the God that Muslims reject. For them, Jesus cannot be God nor can God be a Father, for he cannot have a son. But wait a minute, some will say. This semantic [shibboleth] strangulation can be cleared up if we remember that words have both a denotative and a connotative meaning.
Denotation refers to a dictionary definition, so it would be correct to say that Yahweh and Allah both refer to the concept of God, especially for their respective language groups. However, the connotation is determined by what a person conceives about the object of that word. There is still a world of difference between the content of the word connotation , even if the denotation is the same. As the Law of non-Contradiction teaches, they both cannot be true.
He does not simply punish them. He actively leads them astray. This prayer makes sense because God is capable of guiding humans elsewhere. A number of passages have Satan responsible for this sort of deception. But their hearts had hardened and Satan had made what they had been doing seem decorous zayyana to them. One passage Q even suggests that God hates the unbelievers depending on how one interprets the Arabic word maqt. In thinking through this jarring language, however, readers should keep two things in mind.
In one passage it does this simply by asking man to think about where his food comes from:. God is merciful rahim , meanwhile, in forgiving believers and believers alone. Second, the wrath of the God of Islam is not so different from the wrath of the God of the Bible, who, too, can be vengeful and carry out plots against unbelievers. As Ulrich Lehner has recently put it in the title of his book.
God is Not Nice. But the New Testament certainly leaves a place for divine vengeance. It is a common belief in divine goodness, however, that best supports the same-God position.
This is not to mean that theological controversy will or should end. Muslims through the years have attacked Christian doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation. The reason is that the Ultimate Truth of Islam stands on solid ground and its unshakeable belief in the Unity of God is above reproach.
If Islam were presented in the proper way to the world, it surely might make many people reconsider and re-evaluate their own beliefs. It is quite likely that when they find out that there is a universal religion in the world that teaches people to worship and love God, while also practicing Pure Monotheism, would at least feel that they should re-examine the basis for their own beliefs and doctrines.
For a discussion of this work, please see the following links:. Thank you so much for this article. I am a Christian and I believe that many people, including Christians have been confused and have spread confusion about the term God.
This article makes some really good points about how the truth in Islam is distorted by the media. I wish people would study and find out about Islam for themselves rather than listen to them. If they would, I think Islam would be seen in a more favorable light. This is why so many are converting to Islam in spite of the media making negative comments about it. Some people are finding out the truth about Islam and how pure is the worship of the One True God, Allah. That is one reason I converted.
I LOVE this article! This has been very informative for me. Although I am not Muslim, I have some new friends that are and I wanted to understand alittle bit more about it from a non-bias source Very informative, I recently had an experience that is kind of hard to explain but it has made me question my former beliefs. I find the Islamic religion is very solid leaving me without doubts or fears.
Thank you for this article! I am a follower of Isa since I was very very young, and am always interested to know the Almighty Creator God accurately which includes identifying Isa as God, a view I know is not shared by Muslim friends.
Many Christian believers I know have entered the discussion of whether "Allah" was different or the same as "Yahweh. I wonder what friends who disagree saying Allah is a whole different God would think of this article. I think it is correct that there is one God, whatever you may call him, and different understandings of character. I hope more people come to realize this.
Thank you again. I am a African american n a man of God n I love all races especially Islams Muslims Arab n mainly races who are easily looked Down upon cause of their race n religion I pray that we All seek peace love n harmoney so my prayers go out To the heavenly Allah amen.
Could be an excellent forum for mutual edification, if we all follow discussions with the attitude of true seekers, at both ends of the chats. You have really explained this very well. Thank you. I wish the many who need to understand this would read it.
Thank you for the information and knowledge on this subject. Human brain has not capacity range to actually depict the reality of God. Human bodies only can belief blindly the Allah is alone no thing any creation can be symbolised with that super em authority Allah. Biblical writers identified the Canaanite high god El with their own god even though he originally presided over a large pantheon. The closely related plural form elohim is used more often in the Bible, but both derive from the same Semitic root as Allah.
El and elohim , the New Testament theos hence theology , the Latin deus hence deism , and the pre-Christian, Germanic god can all refer both to the Judeo-Christian god and other supernatural beings. So Jewish, Christian, and Islamic understandings of the divinity originated in polytheistic contexts. Just like traditional Jews and Christians, however, Muslims believe that the religion of the first humans, Adam and Eve, was monotheistic. Because it was corrupted into polytheism, Allah sent prophets who all taught that there is only one god.
Islam took over from Judaism the notion that Abraham in particular was the one who re discovered monotheism and rejected idolatry. Thus Muhammad sought to restore the authentic monotheism of Abraham, from which even Jews and Christians had allegedly deviated.
If he lived at all, which is doubtful, Abraham presumably flourished early in the second millennium BCE.
